New River is named after the seasonal wash of the same name, part of the Agua Fria River system which drains into the Salt River. Founded as a stagecoach stop, New River has always been rural in character. Many properties have horse privileges. The neighboring communities are Anthem, Black Canyon City, Peoria, Cave Creek and Phoenix. According to the latest census count, there were 10,740 people in New River.
