D-Backs start 10th season

[Arizona Diamondbacks logo] Isn't it hard to remember what pro baseball in the Valley was like before the Diamondbacks? There were tremendous ups and downs in the past nine seasons hosting a Major League Club. As the D-Backs are poised to enter their 10th season, there is a youthful optimism for the future and new red uniforms to signal the beginning of a new era.

Work on Big League Dreams behind schedule

Gilbert is about two months behind the original schedule of the Big League Dreams sports complex. Difficulties obtaining materials and design changes, including expanding the size of the restaurants and installation of additional safety nets, have extended the time needed to complete the project, said Paul Mood, Gilbert's capital projects administrator. The town is constructing the sports complex at a maximum cost of $33.6 million.

Big League Dreams USA LLC will handle maintenance and operations . Gilbert, which expects to get between $500,000 and $1 million annually from the facility, is required to have the park substantially complete by Nov. 30 as part of a maintenance and operations agreement with the company.

"We're going to meet our contractual obligations to Big League Dreams," Mood said. Gilbert's Big League Dreams complex, near Recker and Elliot roads, will host adult league, youth baseball and softball games, tournaments and clinics.

The facility will have eight ball fields, model after big league parks such as Chase Field and Wrigley Field . Workers started laying sod for the ball fields this week, Mood said.
Plans also call for a 24,000-square-foot indoor arena for soccer and community events. A corporate event area and an eight-station batting cage are also planned. Substantial completion of the complex, which would allow for Big League Dreams to start using it, is expected in early October, Mood said. There could still be minor items to correct then, he added..

Completion of the facility is scheduled for November. Big League Dreams would need to have access to the complext by the first week of October to be able run leagues in 2007, said Jeff Odekirk, chief operating officer of Chino Hills, Calif.-based company.

Cleveland Indians

The Cleveland Indians made an agreement to move their spring training back to Arizona. They had trained in Tucson until 1993. In Goodyear, a $77.5 million facility with a 10,000-seat stadium is planned to be built.

Arizona Cricket Association

The ACA is a non-profit association that has been formed to encourage and support the playing of cricket in Arizona. Currently, the ACA comprises fourteen Cricket Clubs, each providing one full team. Twelve clubs are in the Phoenix metropolitan area and two are in Tucson. ACA players are from the all over the world, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the West Indies as well as a few players from the USA.

There are five different grounds in Phoenix and on one in Tucson and the playing season in Arizona starts in September and ends in April. Games are played as part of the Arizona Cricket League and Team and Association sponsors are always welcome and can expect to receive a variety of benefits.

Since each roster can hold only 11 players, new teams are formed whenever enough new people join the league.
